Why Victorious Angel of Death Called Weeping Angel

Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland contains over 100,000 graves, including those of presidents and business magnates. However, perhaps his most striking tombstone is the disturbing statue of the archangel Hasselot.
Actually called the “Victorious Angel of Death,” this stoic angel sits on the marble headstones of cannery entrepreneur Francis Haseroth and his family. A life-size bronze holds an extinct torch upside down, symbolizing the extinction of life. Her wings are outstretched and she looks straight ahead.
However, the most striking feature of the statue is that the keeper of death appears to be weeping black tears that flow from her eyes and run down her neck. These “tears” formed over time as a result of the aging of the bronze, combined with the impressive carvings on the piece itself. For this reason, she is often referred to as the Weeping Angel.
Though Lake View Cemetery covers over 280 acres, quite a few visitors take the time to find this melancholy guardian. As undeniably disturbing as she is, she is also undeniably beautiful.
The Angel is located in Lot 14, Sector 9. Maps are available at the gate, in the main office, and at the Garfield Monument. It is easy to miss, it is not far from the road, hidden under the trees; the nearest landmark is Hanna’s Mausoleum marked on the map in Section 9.
