Ecstasy of Saint Teresa

Gian Lorenzo Bernini

1647–52

Benigni, the great Italian architect and sculptor, is best known for the piazza and colonnade of St. Peter's, but it is so gorgeous that it steals the show from the dome of the main cathedral. Mr Benigni became so controversial that he fell silent for 10 years.

In the end, Bernini relied on this Victorian church - the Cornaro chapel "Saint Teresa's Addiction", which changed the fate of the second time, showing the great influence of this sculpture.

"The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa" depicts a very special moment: Mother Teresa of Spain, in a dream, had the experience of communion of the Holy Spirit: an angel stabbed the arrow of divine love into her heart, she was in pain and ecstasy, deeply intoxicated, unable to extricate herself.

Bernini's "addiction to St. Theresa" had such an impact, not only because of its skill, but also because of the controversy it caused.

Teresa's eyes closed, her lips parted, her body floating on the clouds, convulsing slightly with ecstasy, in an ineffable ecstasy.

Benigni deftly straddles the boundary between the sacred and the erotic, filling both the physical and the sensuous with captivating imagination.

Besides, it would be a shame to appreciate the sculpture only in isolation. To set off the atmosphere, Bernini decorated the chapel with more than 20 kinds of colored marble. In the middle of the resplendent stage, the golden wire fell from the sky like a spotlight.

Bernini even sculpted the audience on the sides of the stage, as if witnessing a magnificent stage play, full of unparalleled dramatic tension.

The church did not criticize the addiction of St. Teresa, but praised it. Because it was the height of the Counter-Reformation, the church needed this kind of strong, powerful work to move the faithful.

There is no work more shocking and compelling than "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa" when a pious faith seeks to unite the soul with God. For all its worldly lust, Benigni suppresses it with a perfect "divinity".
