Twelve new sculptures were recently added to the public art collection in downtown DeLand. The new works are part of the City Sculpture Walk, a collaboration between the city and the Derain Art Museum.
New artwork was requested from artists across the country and joined nearly 50 sculptural works in downtown DeLand. LIGHTHOUSE PHOTO / MARSHA MCLAUGHLINART YOU CAN PLAY – This giant red sculpture, Glockenspiel by artist Jarod Czajevsky, is installed outside the DaVinci Cafe at 112 W. Georgia Ave. in the center of DeLand. Like the instrument for which the sculpture is named, each metal tube of the glockenspiel emits a musical tone when struck with a hammer mounted on the artwork.
John Wilton, chairman of the Public Arts Council, told The Beacon: “Over the past two years, due to the pandemic, efforts to submit new works have been kept to a minimum, and the opportunity to install 12 new works from across the country has been overwhelming. People are excited – Vermont, New Jersey, Ohio, North and South Carolina, Georgia and, of course, Florida.”
The sculpture is fully installed, but the DeLand Museum of Art will officially celebrate the new sculpture with a reception on Monday, April 3 at 6:00 pm at the Museum Center at 100 N. Woodland Blvd. At the front desk, the museum will provide a new brochure listing all the sculptures in downtown DeLand – 12 new works, 10 butterflies and 26 other sculptures.
In the meantime, anyone who wants to learn more about the city’s sculpture alley can use the free audio guide via the Otocast app on their smartphone. After downloading the app and turning on Otocast, a free tour of downtown DeLand sculptures read by John Wilton will be offered to determine your location.
