Newport Beach residents have less than a week to weigh which of the 33 works will be on display as part of the eighth round of the Civic Center Park rotation.
“We encourage all Newport Beach residents to contribute and select their favorite sculptures for Phase 8 of the Civic Center Park Sculpture Show,” said Arlene Greer, Chair of the Newport Beach Arts Council. “There are many sculptures to consider and we look forward to looking forward to the community joining us in June to see the sculptures from Issue 7 and the new sculptures from Issue 8.”
Voting is available at sparkoc.com/nb_sculpture_poll. Only Newport Beach residents can vote, ballots with zip codes outside the city will not count. Each voter is limited to three votes, meaning the public can choose a total of three sculptures.
Cultural Assistant Camilla Escareal-Garcia said on Thursday that the voting sculptures were selected by a curatorial panel that included the city’s Arts Council and two guest judges, Lisa Berman and Matteo Tannat. The group voted for each sculpture individually, with the highest score going to the public poll.
Sculptures are selected based on artistic merit, durability, utility, and suitability for the site. Following the poll, the committee will review the results and is expected to present the 10 finalists and their three deputies to the city council on February 14.
Pending approval, the sculptures will be erected throughout the park to meet size, weight and foundation requirements for the Orange County Arts Association, a non-profit arts council that also oversees the vote itself.
The rotating sculpture exhibition began in 2013 after the Civic Center Park was completed. The work is leased for two years and the sculptor receives a small fee for providing the work. Artists need to be maintained and repaired as needed. The installation follows the seventh phase, which was approved last February and opened in the summer. They will be on display until the summer of 2024.
