Louis Bourgeois giant spider sculpture sold at auction for a record $32.8 million

       The 10-foot-tall bronze spider has set a new auction record for the artist’s sculpture, Sotheby’s said on Friday.
       The 1996 Louise Bourgeois Spider, over 10 feet tall and over 18 feet wide, sold for $32.8 million, including handling fees, at an auction in New York Thursday night.
        Only four of the Franco-American artist’s spider-like works appeared at auction. In May 2019, another work was sold at Christie’s in New York for $32.1 million.
       The auction record for an artist’s work at auction is still held by Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Grass, which was sold in 2014 by Walmart heiress Alice Walton at the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas, for $44.4 million.
       Bourgeois, who died in 2010 at the age of 98, only started creating spiders in her 80s, but these towering creatures have become her most famous work.
       Sculptures from this series are exhibited in many of the world’s leading museums, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Dia Lighthouse in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
        Kelsey Leonard, head of contemporary evening sales at Sotheby’s in New York, said that upon seeing the sculpture, “it set a record price for Louise Bourgeois and became the artist’s most prized work.” The sculpture is really a special moment.
