British builders discover ancient Roman sculpture

       Builder Greg Crowley was renovating a park near historic Burghley House in England in April 2023, a historic site announced earlier this month. He came across the head of an 1,800-year-old Roman statue.
        Crowley first discovered the head while digging in the soil. A bust of the sculpture was discovered several weeks later.
       ”I was shocked when the excavator bucket rolled over what I thought was a large boulder and exposed the face,” Crowley said. “When I picked it up, I realized it was the head of a statue. I couldn’t believe it when they told me it was a Roman marble statue. It was an amazing feeling to discover something so ancient and special – definitely the best discovery I’ve ever made.”
       The marble head of a Roman woman, which now holds pride of place on the striking Hell’s Staircase at Burghley House, was discovered by an excavator driver in the spring of 2023 and is believed to have belonged to the 9th Earl during one of two trips to Italy in the 1760s 
        Several years later, it was discovered that the sculpture had an iron pin attached to it, which the winery said was a common modification used by Italian antiquarians in the 18th century. Ancient Roman sculptures found in Burley House. 
        The Roman sculpture is believed to have been brought to the house during one of the 9th Earl’s two visits to Italy in the 1760s. It is believed that during this time the Count brought several sculptures to the site, but it is unclear how the head and bust came to be buried in a park near the site.
       The house was built by William Cecil, also known as Lord Burghley, and his descendants still live there.
