New Yorkers craving the glamor of the Windy City can rejoice as artist Anish Kapoor has moved a version of his famous Cloud Gate sculpture to a Manhattan street corner. Unlike the freestanding Bean in the center of Chicago’s Millennium Park, the as-yet-unnamed figure is built into the base of a 2017 Herzog & de Meuron apartment building at a less-trafficked Tribeca intersection. During a RECORD visit in early February, just after the opening, over 40 passers-by stopped for an hour to admire and touch the sculpture, as well as photograph its irresistibly reflective surface. “I love how it reflects the city for you,” says one New Yorker. “It looked like a drop of chewing gum,” said another.
