Sturgis artist honored with 2022 SculptureWalk People’s Choice Award.

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News) – The 2022 SculptureWalk People’s Choice Award goes to Travis Sorenson of Sturgis for his sculpture Moose.
“We thank every artist who entered, everyone who voted for their favorite piece, and the City of Sioux Falls for supporting our mission of bringing art to the people. We can’t wait to see these great works permanently on display in our community. ,” said SculptureWalk Chairman Regan Smith.
The winning sculpture is made from recycled stainless steel and copper and features an inlaid bust of an elk.
“I am very honored and grateful to have one of my sculptures installed in Sioux Falls,” said sculptor Travis Sorenson.
People’s Choice voting is open to the public until September 30th. Each year, the winning sculpture is purchased by the city of Sioux Falls and added to the public art collection.
“The Board of the Visual Arts Council is proud to support Travis Sorenson, recipient of this year’s SculptureWalk People’s Choice Award. We look forward to adding the Moose Sorenson sculpture to the city’s permanent collection,” said Visual Arts Council Chairman Joe Schaeffer.
In addition to this award, Sorensen’s sculpture “Maximus Elk” won the Best of Show award in 2021, his sculpture “Cimarron” won the Best of Show award in 2019, and his sculpture “Horse” won the Best of Show award in 2018. in Show and Best in Show in 2017 for the sculpture “Whirlwind of Life”. The winners of the Best of Show SculptureWalk present the best sculptures judged on artistic merit and creativity.
Voting for People’s Choice Award winning sculptures is easier than ever this year thanks to our new digital voting feature. People can also vote using the printed ballots provided in this exhibition brochure. Of the 500 ballots this year, 294 were submitted digitally.
The winning sculpture will remain on its pedestal in front of the Carpenter Building in downtown Sioux Falls (221 S. Phillips Ave.) until spring. The Visual Arts Council agreed with the City of Sioux Falls before placing the sculpture in a more permanent location for all to enjoy.
