The 12-foot-tall bronze monument, commissioned by the board, now stands outside the McKissick Museum on historic Horseshoe. Representatives of the Treadwell, Solomon and Anderson families, as well as USC President Michael Amiridis, Board of Regents Chairman Tad Westbrook and numerous community leaders were in attendance, according to the dedication ceremony.
“Rising tall in the heart of our historic Horseshoe, this inspiring monument will serve every day as a testament to the university’s unwavering commitment to providing educational opportunities for all,” Amiridis said. “This is our commitment to South Carolina. Responsibility of the people. »
At the age of 16, Henri Monteith Treadwell sued to be integrated into the University of Southern California, becoming the university's first black graduate since Reconstruction. Her remarkable academic journey continued, earning her advanced degree and pursuing a distinguished career in public health.
Robert Anderson, a political science major, and James Solomon Jr., a mathematics graduate student from Greenville, also made significant contributions to their communities and careers after graduating from USC. Anderson's service in Vietnam and subsequent work in social services, as well as Solomon's role in education and state government, exemplify their dedication to public service.
Sculptor Basil Watson said in a statement: "It has been a long journey, but a satisfying one and a source of pride knowing that my contribution will be to build a lasting monument that represents a legacy of the values of equality and justice." "
Located near the Osborne Administration Building and the University Visitor Center, the monument serves as a historical reminder of the University's path to inclusion and progress.
